Transportation: Ice Roads Go back one page |

|
"Yeah. Since air travel is very expensive, people construct ice roads or winter roads on frozen water to allow trucks and other vehicles to get to communities that previously had no road access. Before an ice road is opened, engineers use sophisticated equipment to increase the thickness of the ice, and make sure it is safe for travel. Sure it's handy, but accidents still happen. There's a documentary all about it called "Ice Road Truckers". It's very interesting stuff! Of the ice roads I recognize, I do remember one that travels from Nunavut to the Northwest Territories, called the 'Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road'." |
