Traditions: Jigging Go back one page |
You continue to ride on the back of the snowmobile, until you reach the local survival store. Mr. Okpik buys 4 items: a fishing line, an ice saw, a spear, and a colourful rubber fish with a round head. He takes you out to a frozen lake, attaching the rubber fish onto the fishing line. |

"This rubber fish is called a jig, and it's used as bait to attract the fish from underneath the ice. Since the water here is covered by a sheet of ice, we must find a way to get the fishing line through the ice. Good thing we have an ice saw! By cutting a circle or square in the ice, we can throw the line with the fish attached into the water, and bob it up and down to attract fish. Once a fish gets close enough, you catch it by throwing the spear at them. It takes a little getting used to, and you have to be patient. Let me catch a few for dinner so I can make a famous Inuit dish. I know you're hungry!" |
