"The Inuit believed that everything, including animals, plants, rocks, mountains, and rivers, had a spirit. When the body dies, the spirit lives on, and so it's important to perform a ritual to show respect to an animal's spirit before they kill. Otherwise the spirit may seek revenge and curse the community with bad luck! To speak to spirits, most communities relied on a person called the angakok. This person had a great deal of wisdom, and could not only talk to spirits, but also heal the wounds of people, and offer advice." |
