Glaciers: Studying Climate Change                                                  Go back one page

"There are many things scientists do with glaciers to study climate change. You see some of our glaciers have been around for thousands of years. These glaciers carry the history of the world within their ice. By extracting a piece of ice from a glacier and observing it, we can find out what the world was like during the glacier's life. Believe it or not, studying the ice alone is enough to determine what the air used to be like, how much the temperature varied, and even what kind of vegetation used to be around. Studying glaciers has also helped prove that the world has encountered several Ice Ages."
