The Arctic Fox Go back one page |

You hear something fast and powerful approach you. A few more seconds and you realize it's a fox! Its white fur camouflages very well with the snow. It slowly walks, sensing the lemming underneath the snow. Suddenly it jumps up and down, punching the snow with its paws and penetrating it to eventually expose the poor rodent. In an instant it grabs the lemming by the neck and wanders off, vanishing from sight. |

"Yikes! Well, that's the circle of life. The Arctic fox is one of the species near the top of the food chain. It's a carnivore and will eat whatever meat it can find throughout the year: lemmings, hares, fish, even other animal's leftovers. They're a desperate bunch. Even for animals that hide under the snow like the lemming, it is able to use its keen sense of hearing to locate them. The fox and the lemming are some of the many animals with the ability to change the colour of their coat to camouflage with the snow. In the winter they're both white, while in the warmer parts of the year when the snow melts, they turn brown." |
