The Festival (send postcard!) Go back one page |

Everyone agrees to go to the festival after they finish dinner. As you step outside you can already hear the sound of beating drums. When you arrive you see fireworks exploding in the sky. Two women stand shoulder to shoulder and begin to throat sing, accompanied by drum dancers and other energetic performers. Afterwards there is a round of applause, and Mr. Okpik tells you to come meet someone. He introduces you to one of the drum dancers, Tanya. |

"Ai! That's Inuktitut for 'hello'! My name's Tanya, and I come to this festival every year to perform. It's nice to meet you, and I hope you're enjoying your time here in Iqaluit. Mr. Okpik is a good friend of mine, and he's told me about how you're planning to learn all about the Arctic. Sounds fun! If you want I can teach you some words and phrases in Inuktitut, the language of the Inuit people." |
